Entry deadline for 2016 Cornish Winter Fair draws near
October 17, 2016
Talented cooks, handicraft experts, green-fingered vegetable growers and livestock showing contenders are all encouraged to get their entries in for the competitive sections of this year’s Cornish Winter Fair.
The event made its debut last year by combining the competitions from the Wadebridge Prime Stock & Produce Show with a wider celebration of Cornish farming and food. It proved a winning formula with competitive entries up and more than 5000 people turning out to enjoy the day.
The classes on offer include livestock showing, vegetables, cookery, handicrafts and floral art. There are also sections for children, local schools, Young Farmers Clubs and Women’s Institutes.
Budding bakers might be tempted to enter a new class on offer this year, the bake-off inspired ‘Showstopper’, which is likely to be very hotly contested.
The closing date for entries in all classes is Friday 4th November and honorary show secretary, Christopher Riddle, hopes for another bumper entry across the board in 2016.
“We had a fantastic increase in entries last year when the first Cornish Winter Fair took place and we hope even more people across Cornwall, and further afield, might feel the urge to get involved in the wide range of competitive classes this time.”
Prime stock shows have been part of rural life for more than two centuries and these competitive events, traditionally staged in cattle markets up and down the land during the winter months, act as a showcase for farmers and growers.
Cornwall still boasts four thriving winter shows, as well as the Wadebridge event which is now in its 138th year, Helston, Liskeard and Truro also host events.
Whilst offering a competitive element these shows are very much a fixture in the Cornish countryside social calendar. They provide the perfect excuse, if one was needed, for the rural community to get-together.
The Cornish Winter Fair takes place on Saturday 19th November from 10am to 5pm at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge. Entry to the event is free of charge.
