Lifetime Achievement Award for Border Union Secretary

November 29, 2017

Border Union Agricultural Society (BUAS) Secretary Ron Wilson has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards.

Organised and hosted by Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce (SBCC), the Awards celebrate the best of Borders business in a variety of sectors ranging from agriculture and tourism to manufacturing and the creative industries.

Ron recently announced his forthcoming retirement following 20 years as Border Union Secretary. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his role in overseeing the development of the Society’s home at Springwood Park as a major events venue. This included the building of Springwood Hall, the venue for Friday’s SBCC Excellence Awards ceremony, which has helped the Society attract over 100 lets each year to the Border Union Showground.

Ron also organises a number of major events that also make a significant contribution to the Borders economy – the two-day Border Union Show, the UK’s largest Ram Sales, and the annual Championship Dog Show. He was also praised for championing the Society’s educational initiatives, including the Schools Countryside Day, which has been attended by over 6,500 primary school children since it began in 2013.

Society business meant that Ron was unable to attend the Awards to pick up his trophy, but it was later presented to him by Border Union Agricultural Society Chairman, Douglas Stephen.

Speaking after he received his award, Ron said: “It’s truly humbling to receive an accolade like this. I, my wife Joan and our small team here at the Showground, have all worked incredibly hard on behalf of the Border Union over the years and I’m delighted that the significance of the Society’s work, both to the agricultural community, and the wider business environment in the region, has been recognised in this way. I’d like to thank the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce for this prestigious award.”

Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Jack Clark said: “Our Awards are all about recognising excellence and innovation in business and Ron Wilson’s efforts are a fine example of both. The work he has carried out over two incredible decades has helped not just current and future generations in the agricultural community, but businesses in tourism, retail and beyond. We all have much to thank him for and believe he is a very worthy winner of our Lifetime Achievement Award.”
