Why the Industry Code of Practice matters more than ever…

Posted: 31st March 2026

With the start of show season just around the corner, it’s the perfect moment to revisit one of the most important documents guiding our sector: The Industry Code of Practice for Preventing or Controlling Ill Health from Animal Contact at Visitor Attractions (Version 3, 2021).

This Code isn’t just a formality, it’s the backbone of how we protect our visitors, our staff, our animals and the reputation of our events.

The Code was created by the industry for the industry, offering “sensible, practical and proportionate guidance” to help operators manage zoonotic risks effectively. Whether you run a large multi-day show or a small community event, the principles apply to all of us.

It reminds us that while millions of people safely enjoy animal encounters every year, “very low numbers of micro‑organisms can cause human infection,” making consistent, thoughtful controls essential.

Key Areas of the Code

As you prepare your site, team and animals for the season ahead, make sure you’re confident in the Code’s core expectations:

1. Risk Assessment

Every venue must complete a site-specific assessment that identifies hazards, evaluates risks and sets out clear control measures. This isn’t a one‑off task, regular review is part of the process.

2. Clear Zoning and Layout

The Code emphasises the importance of defining:

  • Animal contact areas
  • Non‑contact areas (including eating and play spaces)
  • Look‑and‑see areas, where contact is possible even if not intended

Clear signage and well‑planned visitor routes are essential tools.

3. Handwashing Facilities

Handwashing remains one of the most effective defences against zoonotic disease. Facilities must be:

  • Conveniently located
  • Supplied with running water, liquid soap and paper towels
  • Supported by clear signage

The Code is explicit: “sanitiser is no substitute.”

4. Training and Supervision

Your team, whether permanent, seasonal or volunteer must understand:

  • The risks
  • The control measures
  • How to communicate key messages to visitors
  • How to supervise contact areas safely

5. Visitor Information

Relying on signage alone is not enough. The Code stresses that operators must ensure visitors are aware of the risks and the precautions expected of them. This includes pre‑visit information and clear messaging throughout the site.

Know the Code

Understanding and applying the Code is about more than compliance. It protects:

  • Public health
  • Your organisation’s reputation
  • The wider industry
  • The educational value of animal encounters

As the Code notes, we have a moral, legal, financial and reputational responsibility to get this right.

Our shows and events are at their best when they are safe, welcoming and professionally run. By revisiting the Code now and ensuring every member of your team understands its expectations, you’re helping to safeguard the future of animal‑based attractions and the trust of the public we serve.
